Nando’s ‘Julius’ finds a new home

Posted in General with tags , , , , on Thursday, 7 May 2009 by Deems

The bidding is over – ‘Julius’ has found a new home after a successful bid of 10 000 000 cents (that’s so much more than the change ‘Julius’ was talking about in the ad).

After over 700 bids, the controversial dummy star of the Nando’s advertisements and instigator of threats of militant action from the ANC Youth League has been bought for R100 000 by Johannesburg businessman Ryan Lotter. – source IOL

There’s even a full interview with ‘Julius’ that you can read here.

Money for a worthwhile cause – well done Nando’s and Ryan Lotter.

Nando’s ‘Julius’ up for auction

Posted in Funny, General with tags , , , , , , on Tuesday, 5 May 2009 by Deems

nandos_julius_puppetNando’s have done it again! First they brought you a great advertisement before the elections using their puppet called ‘Julius’. Then, Julius Malema and the ANCYL got angry and “forced” Nando’s to withdraw their advert, or else. Nando’s responded.

Now in a bid to prevent ‘Julius’ from gathering dust just sitting in a corner, they’ve put him up for auction, to the highest bidder (proably around R5) and the proceeds will go to the Self-Help Development Organisation, which helps young men to finish school and study mechanics, woodworking and electrical engineering.

You can find out more on the Dispatch Now blog here. [via the_dre]

Update: 6 May 2009
It appears that more than 100 bids have been received so far for the puppet, the highest being for R85 000.

The R85 000 bid was not too bad, considering that Nando’s had said it believed it would receive “at least R5 for him”.

Chauke said it had cost about R30 000 to create the hand-crafted radio-controlled ventriloquist dummy, the star of a recent television advertisement.

He said Nando’s had not heard from the ANC Youth League president since it announced that his puppet would be auctioned for a charity group that funds, among other things, courses in woodwork, the subject Malema notoriously scored a GG for in matric, according to reports. – source News24

Advertising: Nando’s stick to their guns

Not only do Nando’s provide great fast-food they also have a kick-ass marketing department, who don’t take crap from anyone, even if it ruffles a few feathers.

Not too long ago, just before our National elections, last week, Nando’s aired an advert about Change with a puppet called Julius, which got Julius Malema, leader of the ANC Youth League, hot under the collar, demanding they remove their advert or face millitant action!

Well, Nando’s met with Julius and agreed that they would change (blured out his face, altered his voice, and posted a message in the ticker at the bottom of the screen) their advert – below is the result – brilliant! [via Cherryflava

You can see the original advert at the bottom of this post.

Clever Election Marketing Strategies

The South African Elections are just around the corner, litereally as they’re tomorrow, Wednesday 22nd April 2009.

Wimpy are offering a free cup of coffee to anyone on election day who proves they’ve voted – see video below [via CherryFlava]

And not to be outdone – Nando’s are doing something similar offering a “voter’s roll” with the (here’s the catch though, where Wimpy doesn’t have a catch) purchase of any chicken meal. [via CherryFlava]

Some more clever electioneering marketing from Nando’s is the following advert which has the ANCYL president Julius Malema fuming and threatening militant action if not withdrawn. Take a look for yourself, you decide. [via News24]
